On Friday, November 30, 2018, at approx. 4:05pm, a victim reported that an unknown male had just attempted to steal packages that had been delivered to her home on Dixwell Ave. As Officer Francis was responding to speak with the victim, an off-duty Lieutenant contacted dispatch reporting that he had observed a blue Altima in the Dixwell Ave area acting suspiciously.
Officer Francis located the vehicle as it pulled into a driveway on Dimmock Street. Officer Francis conducted an investigation and determined that the occupants were in possession of at least 10 packages, all believed to be stolen from the immediate area. The vehicle had pulled into the driveway in an attempt to elude the police.
The following individuals were arrested and charged with Receiving Stolen Property:
Katherine Olivares-Soto, 22, of Barnes St, Pawtucket, RI; Xavier Soto, 22, of Timson St, Lynn; Antoni Garcia-Mota, 21, of Harwick St, Boston; and a male juvenile from Lawrence. All adults involved also had an outstanding warrant for their arrest.
Detective Monteith arrived on scene during the investigation, took possession of all stolen packages, and is in the process of notifying the rightful owners.
A reminder on how to safeguard your package(s):
1.) Send the package to the residence of a trusted friend, relative, or neighbor who you know will be home. Be sure the friend will be available to retrieve the package upon delivery. If possible, have the package shipped to your work address.
2.) Request a signature. Many packages today are sent without a signature required. The package is simply left on the front stairs / porch.
3.) Ask the package delivery company to hold the package at their facility if you will not be home to accept delivery (if available). Most companies allow you to track package for anticipated delivery date.
4.) Leave special instructions on where to deliver the package (for example: please leave package on back stairs, at side door, etc). This will at least keep the package out of plain sight of a passerby. If you use this option, ask that the delivery person remove the note from your front door and leave with package.
5.) Order on-line and have it shipped to the local store for in-store pickup.
6.) Use an Amazon Locker or UPS Access Point Locker.
