The long-awaited demolition of the Quincy Center Garage is now underway. The busway has been relocated (temporary) to the center area of the parking area on the Hancock Street side of the station. MBTA Contractors have begun to install a shielding system around the garage to project the public from debris. The concrete structure has been closed to the public since 2012.
Demolition work will occur in three shifts. During the daytime hours the station will be in full operation. During nighttime and weekends shifts the station will be closed to the public and shuttle bus service will be in operation. As you may know, a significant amount of the structure is over the railroad right-of-way, therefore nighttime and weekend work which can be disruptive is required. We anticipate the work will take approximately three months. When demolition is complete, the busway and parking area will be fully restored.
