PROFESSIONAL THIEF AT LOCAL HEALTH CLUB? A message from Lt. Minton of our Crime Prevention Unit.
On November 13th, a member of the YMCA put his wallet in a locker in the men’s locker room and secured it with a padlock. A few hours later he unlocked his locker and went home. Later that night, at approximately 10:00 p.m., he received a call from Discover Card security stating that there were irregular charges on his card. He denied making any purchases and said that he had his card with him in his wallet. Security asked him to check his wallet and when he did this he was astonished to find the Discover card and another credit card missing. He was also missing cash. He was told that his card was used at the Apple store in Dedham at about 8:00 p.m. that night along with other stores. The fraudulent charges alone at the Apple store neared $9,000.00. The victim was advised to contact the local Police to file a report. The victim told Police that he did observe three males in the locker room but did not see them doing anything wrong. The victim examined his padlock and saw minor scratches on it but it was functional. The victim then contacted a friend who was in the locker room around the same time and learned that he too had damage to his padlock and his keys had been taken from his locker, which was locked at the time. The second victim said that the thief/thieves entered his vehicle, which was parked on Coddington Street, most likely by using the remote to locate it. The vehicle was not taken. The lock was opened and then re-closed. With minor damage, the thief would have time to use the victim’s credit card and the credit card company would most likely learn about the crime before the victim.
