A JOB WELL DONE. . . . .  . On Wednesday, January 21, 2015, Quincy Police Drug Unit Detectives O'Brien, Coen, Keenan, Duran and Sergeant Tapper were working in plain clothes and operating unmarked police cruisers. At approximately 8:15 PM, Sergeant Tapper and Detective Duran were lying low, parked in the rear lot of 125 Granite Street on a drug investigation when they observed two males wearing hooded sweatshirts walk through the open gate that separates Scotch Pond Place and the rear parking lot of the apartment complex.  A few moments later the Detectives heard a loud bang come from the open gate area. When Sergeant Tapper looked up, he saw the same males pushing a motorcycle or scooter back towards Scotch Pond Place. After the drug investigation concluded, Sergeant Tapper checked the area and found a green cover often used to cover a motorcycle or scooter in an empty parking space. He then observed a plastic storage container that is often found on the back of a scooter.  The Sergeant then drove his unmarked cruiser around the area to investigate and as he went behind the apartment complex at 75 Scotch Pond Place, he spotted the same two males huddled behind parked cars and lurking over the ignition area of a Raptor scooter.  Sergeant Tapper exited his unmarked cruiser and announced "Quincy Police" to the two males and asked them what they were doing. One of the males said that they were waiting for a friend who lives in the building.  Sergeant Tapper then inquired about the scooter and the same male said that they just came from Boston. The Sergeant knew that this statement was not true because he had just seen both individuals in the rear of 125 Granite Street and the scooter was cold to the touch. There was also a screw driver on the ground under the scooter. Detective Duran arrived on scene and after being briefed, read both males their Miranda Rights to which they stated they understood.  The males, now suspects, both stated that their scooter "died" and they had to push the scooter into the parking lot. When told that they were observed in the rear of 125 Granite Street, neither suspect responded.  Suspect #1 was asked where the keys were and he said he didn't have any.  Suspect #2 added that "the scooter is a kick start."  Detective Duran told the suspects that since the scooter had an ignition, there had to be a key, but again the suspects argued that only a kick start was needed.  Upon further inspection of the ignition, the Detectives saw that there were deep pry marks on it.  Based on all the information and evidence available, the two suspects, aged 18 and 22 and both from Boston, were charged with, “Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Burglarious Tools and Destruction of Property.  The scooter was towed away and the owner was located the next day.  Nice Work!

TAX SEASON SCAMS:  As taxpayers begin to collect all sorts of forms to prepare their taxes, keep in mind that there are scammers out there who may try to steal your identity or tax refund.  The identity theft occurs when someone uses your social security number to get your refund or get a job.   The victim often finds out after filing their tax return.

IRS imposters work year-round — posing as the IRS when they call and say you owe taxes. They even threaten to have you arrested, often by the local Police, if you don’t put money on a prepaid debit card and tell them the card number. They might know all or part of your Social Security number, and can fake caller ID information to make it look like it really is the IRS calling.  Remember, the IRS does not make an initial telephone call to you – the first step is by mail with a telephone number to call.
