2012 ANNUAL NOTICE
In Compliance with provisions of Section 41, Chapter 98, of the General Laws of Massachusetts, as amended by Chapter 32 of Acts of 1928, I hereby give notice to all inhabitants or persons having usual places of business in Quincy using weighing and measuring devices for the purpose of buying or selling goods, wares or merchandise for public weighing or for hire or reward, to bring in such weighing and measuring devices to be tested, adjusted and sealed. I shall be at the office of Weights and Measures, 55 Sea St, every day during regular business hours to attend to this duty.
Our Mission
Fairness in the marketplace is a cornerstone of economic health for consumers and businesses alike. Today's society places great trust in the marketplace that we are getting what we pay for. Retailers also rely on a fair environment where the competition is held to the same high standards that they themselves adhere to. Considering that as much as 50% of a family′s income is used to purchase consumer goods, the impact on an inaccurate marketplace can be significant to each of us. For example, if every gas pump in the country were inaccurate by slightly more than a tablespoon per 5 gallons, it would seem harmless in the individual transaction. Yet it would amount to a cumulative error of about $125 million annually. If every pound of meat were incorrectly weighed by .01 lb, it would amount to 500 million pounds annually. The responsibility to find and correct these errors falls on weights and measures officials across the county.
Quincy residents can feel comfortable when making a purchase that they too are being protected against unfair market practices. To ensure this the weights and measures official annually inspects, approves, adjusts, or rejects over 1000 devices from gasoline pump meters to taxi meters to pharmacy scales. In addition to the numerous devices the official also inspects price markings, pre-packaged weighed commodities, investigates all complaints, and regulates the sales by hawkers and peddlers.
